Marble
Marble has long been selected and valued for its beauty and strength. Carefully
mined in the mountains of Canada, Italy, Germany, Spain, the United States, and
other countries, marble adds an air of sophistication and elegance to any home.
Unique natural color variations and ease of maintenance make marble a popular
choice for countertops, floors, fireplaces, windowsills, vanities, and bathtubs.
It is also fire, erosion, and stain resistant. Once only available to
the wealthy, marble is now accessible to all who appreciate its ageless beauty.

Granite
Granite is quarried from the mountains
of Brazil, Italy, India, the United
States, and other countries
around the world and continues to
be one of the most popular natural
stones on the market. Its durability
and longevity make it ideal for kitchen
countertops and other heavily used
surfaces, including table tops and
floors. Granite is one of the most
bacteria-resistant kitchen surfaces,
is heat resistant, is nearly impossible
to scratch, and with proper cleaning,
will not stain under normal use.
Because of its exceptional strength,
granite is well suited for exterior
applications such as cladding, paving,
and curbing.

Limestone
Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed
largely of the mineral calcite. Especially
popular in architecture in the late 19th
and early 20th centuries, many structures
have been created from limestone. Due
to it’s heaviness, limestone
cannot be used for tall structures, however, it has been used in thin plates
as a façade on some skyscrapers. It is readily available around
the world, including in the United States, France, England, Sweden, Canada, and
Hong Kong. Limestone is relatively
easy to cut and carve, durable, long
lasting, and good for construction in
humid climates.

Soapstone
Soapstone is a metamorphic rock
mainly composed of quartz and muscovite,
along with other minerals. It can
be made into roofing slates (shingles)
because of its clevage and grain, two
lines of breakability that make it possible
to split into thin sheets. In the 18th
and 19th centuries, slate was used for
blackboards and individual writing slates.
More recently, it has been used for laboratory
bench tops and billiard table tops due
to it’s thermal stability and chemical
inertness. Slate can be found around
the globe, including in the United Stated,
United Kingdom, Portugal, Newfoundland,
and in the Arctic.

Travertine
Travertine is a banded, compact
variety of limestone formed along streams,
particularly around waterfalls and hot
or cold springs. Extensive deposits
of travertine are found in Tivoli, Italy.
The stone is characterized by the natural
pitted holes and troughs in its surface.
Some installers use a grout to fill these
holes, whereas others leave them open.
Most commonly used in tile sizes for
floors, paving patios, and garden paths,
travertine can be polished to a smooth,
shiny finish and comes in a variety of
colors. The largest building in the world
constructed mainly of travertine is the
Colosseum in Rome.
